The problems with screenings

It is no secret that early detection is the best way to avoid breast cancer, however when women should begin getting screenings has been up for discussion, according to KTVZ-TV.

"Those women need to have a mammogram done at a very early age, starting at the age of 25, or 10 years younger than the youngest person [in their family] with breast cancer, which ever is earliest," Dr. Cora Calomeni told the news source.

The exact appropriate age differs for each individual, as some women can develop breast cancer earlier than others, as according to the news provider.

Many do not get the procedure because of the fear that it will be painful. However, it is usually only uncomfortable for a brief period of time. Compared to breast cancer - many would rather endure just few seconds of discomfort, the media outlet reports.

According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, it is recommended that once a woman turns 40 she gets a mammogram. However, those who have an extensive family history of the disease may want to go earlier just in case in order to catch the disease during its beginning stages.
