With new technology, Florida hospital emphasizes early breast cancer detection

Because the early detection of breast cancer can make all the difference for some women, the Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center has recently added new technology to their facility which could help patients manage their breast cancer risk.

The new tool uses digital mammography to provide a diagnostic image of a breast and locate any potentially harmful growths, NewsChief.com reports.

"Our state-of-the-art GE Healthcare Large Field Essentials Digital Mammography system provides physicians with clear, precise, all-digital images, rather than images on X-ray film," David Berg, the hospital's director of diagnostics imaging said in a statement.

He added, "What's more, the system provides the largest field of view currently available, which can be extremely helpful for precision imaging."

Like a traditional mammogram, the new system uses compression and uses X-rays to produce an image of the breast. However, it uses less radiation and takes half as long because there is no film to develop, the news source reports.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women in their 20s and 30s begin receiving breast cancer screenings as part of a periodic health exam and that those over 40 should be screened annually.
