Sadly, Alaina Giordano lost her battle with cancer in May 2012. Thank you to all who signed. This petition will stay live in honor of Alaina's memory, and for the purpose of advocating for the rights of those with cancer.
Goal: 20,000 Progress: 18,994
Sponsored by: The Breast Cancer Site

Nobody should lose contact with their children simply because they have cancer. Yet when North Carolina Judge Nancy Gordon ruled on a recent custody case, she cited the mother's breast cancer as a reason to remove the children from her care so they could have a "normal" life with their father.

"I believe everything happens for a reason. After I get my kids back or get to keep them, I'd like to see legislation passed to protect people who are sick from losing their children," the stunned mother Alaina Giordano said in an interview.

This type of ruling is not only heartbreaking, it's disturbing for its implications that cancer defines whether someone can be a good parent.

Cancer patients are not defined by their illness. Nobody's eligibility to be a fit parent should be based on such an arbitrary definition.

Sign the petition imploring North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue to protect the rights of parents with cancer.

Dear Governor Perdue,

Recently, Alaina Giordano, a dedicated North Carolina mother, had her stage 4 breast cancer cited as a reason that she should not have custody of her children.

I think it's outrageous and that's why I'm writing to you today.

Discrimination is wrong and nobody's fitness to be a parent should be judged solely on the diagnosis of a disease. I'm asking you to help Alaina Giordano and others like her by introducing legislation to protect the rights of parents with cancer.

Please lead the way in showing compassion for parents with cancer and their children.

Sincerely yours,

Apr 21, 2013 Amanda Davis I was a single parent and had breast cancer. I can tell you my son who at the time was 11 refused to leave my side to visit his dad. Yes its hard on the kids but they love their mother no less and want to spend as much time as they can with her.

Apr 19, 2013 (Name not displayed) I'm a single parent who's battling breast cancer...and my child is the one person who keeps me going! Don't take away our children because of this disease!
Apr 18, 2013 Cansel Cebeci Breast cancer isn't a choice, and though watching a loved one fight such a terrible disease is heartbreaking, leaving them is even worse. So removing kids from their parents because they have breast cancer is a LOSE, LOSE, SITUATION.
