Goal: 15,000 Progress: 1,610
Sponsored by: Global Girlfriend

It's not easy being a girl these days. Even today, women face all kinds of adversity in our largely male-driven world.

The proof is in the numbers. Every year over two million girls are experience forced genital mutilation. Over 75 percent of war casualties are women. Approximately 80 percent of human trafficking victims are female. And worldwide, close to 50 percent of women will experience domestic violence of some kind.

Though women have made tremendous advances toward equality and empowerment in the last century, the statistics speak for themselves — and there's still a long way to go.

School Girls Unite — an organization dedicated to advancing women — is proposing to make September 22 International Day of the Girl, so on that day we may highlight and celebrate the empowerment of women worldwide.

Dear United Nations representatives:

As you know, women today continue to face a tremendous amount of adversity. Even despite all of the advancements toward equality and human rights women have made over the years, they still experience more inequality and suffering than men ever will.

For example, one in five college women will experience rape in her college career. Seventy percent of people living in poverty worldwide are women. Women are paid 30-40 percent less than women for the same occupations. And three hundred women die each day of pregnancy-related issues. The list goes on and on.

Clearly, there is still a long way to go before women reach true equality on a global level. That's why I'm writing to you today — to ask that you designate September 22 as International Day of the Girl.

An official day for girls across the globe will encourage individuals and organizations worldwide to promote female equality, health, happiness, as well as celebrate the invaluable contributions females make to society.

Please make September 22 International Day of the Girl!

Thank you.
