Rape isn't something we should have to prepare for. While it's always good to be aware of danger, no one should have to expect they may be raped in their lifetime. But if Representative Pete DeGraaf has his way, he'd have us think differently.
During a discussion about insurance coverage in the House of Representatives, Representative DeGraaf said a woman "needs to plan ahead" for potentially being impregnated during a rape and that she should purchase an expensive healthcare plan that would cover abortion just in case. He said, "We do need to plan ahead, don't we, in life?...I have spare tire on my car...I have a lot of things that I plan ahead for."
DeGraaf's comments compare rape to a completely unrelated issue. There are no correlations between buying rape insurance and carrying a spare tire.
Write to Representative DeGraaf asking him to apologize to the women he has offended with his irresponsible comments.
Dear Representative DeGraff,
I am highly offended by your comments comparing rape insurance to carrying a spare tire.
Rape is not something that anyone should have to plan for. No one should have to expect that they may one day in their lifetime be raped. And no woman should have to pay out of pocket for rape treatment. Your comments suggesting that all women should opt for expensive coverage that would cover a potential rape are appalling. We need to provide these women with treatment regardless.
Rape isn't something that should be viewed as the norm or as something we should prepare for. Rape is never the victim's fault, and therefore we should never put any responsibility on that person for what has happened to them. Asking them to pay for their own treatment is absolutely barbaric.
It is in your best interest to retract and apologize for your irresponsible, offensive comments. As a state representative, you should know better.
Sincerely,
