Goal: 15,000 Progress: 1,200
Sponsored by: The Breast Cancer Site

March 8th is International Women's Day and it has been celebrated for over a hundred years. Each year all over the world, people get together for conferences, rallies, theatrical performances, craft markets — activities that honor women's achievements and progress.

But did you know that close to 70% of the world's poverty-stricken are women? Did you know that between 100 and 140 million girls have experienced genital mutilation? How about that one in five women will be a victim of rape in her lifetime?

With numbers like these, it's clear that women have not yet attained full equality in our male-driven world. We need programs for job training, education, and family planning to give women the tools to make their own informed and educated decisions.

International Women's Day is a great place to start. Sign the pledge below promoting women's equality everywhere and in the comments section, tell us about a woman who inspires you.

Mar 9, 2013 (Name not displayed) Women need to stand up for themselves. We can no longer accept being treated like second class citizens, or worse yet, property or slaves. We deserve respect as people, mothers, wives, sisters, colleagues and friends. Be proud and strong. Unite!
