The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994 was created in order to provide female victims of domestic violence assistance, shelter, and resources so they can effectively cope and move forward from what's happened to them.

The passage of VAWA has paved the way for violence prevention programs, rape crisis hotlines and centers, housing assistance for victims of domestic violence, legal help, and more. VAWA supports a community-based intervention model whereby domestic violence is addressed by a coordinated community response.

VAWA is up for reauthorization this year, and that's why now is the time to press our elected officials to support this important piece of legislation that will empower women to recover from domestic violence.

Dear Senator Patrick Leahy:

Every 9 seconds, a woman in the United States is assaulted or beaten. Every day, at least three women are killed by their male partners. With this fact in mind, it's no surprise that domestic violence is the leading source of injuries to women.

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994 was created in response to ever-growing instances of domestic violence in the United States. VAWA has created several programs aimed at preventing and combating domestic violence by utilizing a whole-community approach. This includes the implementation of violence prevention programs, rape crisis centers and hotlines, legal help/advice, child services, and more.

VAWA is up for reauthorization this year. I am writing to ask that you, as the sponsor of this bill, do all you can to see that it is once again authorized into law.

Please continue your dedicated advocacy for domestic violence victims everywhere.

Sincerely,
