Today Scott Dunton is a champion surfer, but when he was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, he wouldn't consider himself a champion at managing his diabetes. Surfing since he was five-year-old, Scott grew up in the water and was a very active kid. Not worrying about what he ate, drank, or did, it was definitely a mental and physical battle when he was diagnosed at the age of 16.

Urban Miyares thanks his diabetes for keeping him alive today. A Vietnam vet, in 1968, this infantry platoon sergeant was out on the field when the enemy hit and he was knocked. Urban's platoon was wiped out and he along with the rest of them, was put in a body bags for two days. It wasn't until a medic unzipped Urban's bag on that second day that they discovered he was still breathing. Urban was knocked out not by the enemy, but by a diabetic coma (DKA).

With type 2 comes risks such as vision loss, heart and blood vessel disease, kidney damage, and nerve damage. In particular neuropathy (nerve damage) makes the smallest annoyances lead to more serious health issues such as amputation. Nothing puts diabetics in the hospital more than neuropathy.

Type 1 Kerri has been using an insulin pump for the past 8 years and loves how it allows her to escape 1,460 insulin shots. What's also great about her pump is that it helps her to control her diabetes allowing her to have a baby (a feat many doctors told her mother would not be possible when she was diagnosed at 6-years-old.)

Type 2 Ben Gray learned how to manage his diabetes the hard way. He now wishes that he had made a 180 degree change towards a healthier life when he was first diagnosed. Today he goes through dialysis three times a week for 3 to 4 hours each day. When type 2 diabetics go through dialysis about 80 to 90% of their kidneys are not functioning anymore and they need the assistance of dialysis to keep going.
