Victims of abuse have enough to worry about without having to face realities like deportation. But if certain House Republicans get their way, abuse victims who aren't citizens of this country could be in big trouble.

Current legislation protects abuse victims from deportation and helps them to remain in the country legally. But the HALT Act would remove the allowances and protections for abuse victims, making them vulnerable to deportation if they report the crime.

No one should ever be punished for reporting a crime of abuse. Abuse victims — citizens or not — should be protected in this country no matter what.

Dear Representative Lamar Smith,

I am writing in protest of your sponsorship of the HALT Act, a piece of legislation that would put abuse victims who are not US residents in even further danger.

Abuse isn't something to take lightly, and victims of abuse must be treated with the utmost of care and respect. However, when someone who isn't a legal resident of the United States is abused, and reports it, he or she runs the risk of deportation. This discourages individuals from reporting these crimes and therefore the perpetrators remain at large.

We should provide, at the very least, temporary respite from deportation to abuse victims who aren't citizens. They simply shouldn't be faced with more punishment in addition to what they've already been through.

Please consider the safety and well being of abuse victims before you move forward with this legislation.

Thank you.
