At the end of 2010, Burma held elections that decided the military regime would keep control of the country. These elections, however, were completely false and illegitimate. Legitimizing the military rule was no doubt a step in the complete wrong direction.
Under the military rule, Burma is experiencing extreme hardship and violence. The people of Burma are highly impoverished. Villages belonging to ethnic minorities are being decimated by military forces. Legitimizing military leadership has only exacerbated these problems.
Sign the petition asking UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to admonish the spurious elections and support democracy in Burma.
Dear Secretary General Ban Ki-moon,
I am writing to ask that you do not support the illegitimate elections that took place in Burma at the end of 2010. Burma is currently experiencing extreme violence and poverty. Removing the possibility of democracy is only going to intensify these problems.
The Burmese government is violent and repressive. In fact, the military has destroyed complete villages inhabited by ethnic minorities. Since military rule has been legitimized through these elections, the brutality has only continued. The elections served only as a deceptive way for the military regime to make its rule seem fair.
We cannot allow the world to be scammed by these fake elections and consequently for Burma to suffer even more. I am writing to ask that you condemn these spurious elections and continue to promote democracy in Burma.
