The United States is directly contributing to continued poverty in other parts of the world due to its massive domestic subsidization of cotton growing. The subsidies the US government gives to American farmers for growing cotton hurts farmers in developing countries, as cotton comprises a large part of their livelihood.
The World Trade Organization has declared the subsidies violate international trade rules, but that hasn't stopped them. Millions depend on cotton production in Africa, and Brazil is experiencing dramatic profit losses because of the subsidies.
Contact the World Trade Organization asking them to recognize the cotton plight in developing countries and take swift action at home.
Dear WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy:
I am writing to ask for your attention on an important matter.
Cotton subsidies provided to American farmers are drastically affecting developing countries. Because our famers are provided funds to grow cotton, demand for cotton from abroad has significantly decreased. And because for many of these people cotton is their livelihood, this situation is more dire than ever.
We need to recognize how our actions at home are affecting the rest of the world, and this case is no exception. Please do all you can to make sure people in developing countries are given all the opportunities available to them to prevent further poverty.
Thank you for your time.
