How would you feel if you or your family was involved in a natural disaster, and the government then said that there would be no additional money provided for the relief efforts?

In a Fox News interview, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said the government shouldn't take on any more debt by investing in disaster relief funding.

Although America's current debt crisis does warrant making budget cuts across an array of departments, disaster relief and rescue funding should be left off of the table. The fact is, there is simply no way to tell when a catastrophe will strike, and it's up to the government to protect its citizens from further harm.

In light of recent natural disasters, now isn't the time to talk about scaling back relief funding. Write to Eric Cantor expressing your disappointment at his recent remarks.

Dear Eric Cantor,

I am writing to ask that you reconsider your viewpoints on disaster funding. On a recent Fox News airing, you claimed America is too in debt to continue financing the relief efforts of unexpected events.

Natural disasters are always unexpected and that's one of the reasons they have such great impact. We need to be able to rely on governmental assistance when catastrophes dictate that we can't help ourselves. Though I understand the need for cutbacks, disaster relief funding simply shouldn't be considered.

Please consider all of the victims of the most recent tragedies and put yourself in their shoes. You need to help these people because it's the right thing to do.

Sincerely,

Petition Signatures
