Right now is a worrying time for the AIDS and HIV community, as President Obama is expected to support legislation that would ban federal funding for necessary needle exchange programs — both at home and abroad.
Reliable studies have shown that needle exchange programs dramatically decrease the instances of HIV infection in the cities that have them; and the same studies have proven the converse is true for cites that don't.
While spending cuts within the federal budget are necessary, HIV prevention should be off the table. President Obama has continuously committed himself to fighting AIDS worldwide, so let's hold him to his promise.
Tell President Obama to honor his commitment by refusing to sign legislation that puts more people in danger of HIV and AIDS.
Dear President Obama,
I am extremely disappointed to find out you may sign a piece of legislation that would prohibit federal funding toward AIDS and HIV prevention.
I recently learned that this particular amendment would cut funding for needle exchange programs both domestically as well as internationally.
Studies have found that needle exchanges significantly reduce the risk of HIV transmission in the cities where they exist. By the same token, there is no evidence for an increase in drug use or HIV occurrence due to these exchanges. In addition, these necessary programs help bridge the gap between serious addiction to drug treatment, rehabilitation, counseling, and medical care.
Please honor the promise you made for your presidency of combating AIDS around the world by refusing to sign this dangerous piece of legislation.
Thank you!
