Goal: 15,000 Progress: 3,440

In San Francisco, a special program is aiming to tackle the problems of homelessness — both on the human and canine fronts.

The goal of Wonderful Opportunities for Occupants and Fidos, or WOOF, is two-fold: to get panhandlers off the streets and to provide unadoptable, homeless dogs with companionship in hopes of getting them ready to be adopted.

The program has thus far given some panhandlers a responsibility, something to look forward to every day, and constant camaraderie with unconditionally loving creatures. By the same token, many of the dogs involved in the program have transformed from unhealthy, dirty animals to active and virile canines ready to go to an adoptive family.

Wouldn't it be great if every metropolitan area adopted a program like this?

Dear city official:

I'm writing today because I have an idea as to how to combat two problems inherent within our city.

We all know that panhandling isn't ideal for anyone. And we are all more than acutely aware of the stray animal problem in our town. What if there was a way to address both of those issues at the same time, benefitting panhandlers as well as homeless dogs?

San Francisco has recently adopted a program called Wonderful Opportunities for Occupants and Fidos (WOOF) that aims to keep homeless people off the streets and offer a safe home for unadoptable dogs. The result has been a panhandler population that feels needed, cared for, and is able to keep a daily responsibility, as well as healthier dogs who have reached the point of adoptability.

It's not often we come across programs like these that can solve two unrelated problems, and that's why I'm urging you to consider a program like WOOF for our own city.

I hope our town can follow in San Francisco's footsteps!
