The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides low-income families with the financial assistance they need to purchase food. SNAP is the United States' most successful anti-hunger program, and in 2011 alone helped close to 50 million low-income Americans gain access to food.
But during this time of financial uncertainty, the U.S. government has voted to make drastic cuts to SNAP — a move that could mean less food for some families and a full rejection from the program for others. Over $33 billion has been cut from the SNAP program.
While the need for cuts to federal programs is undeniable, hunger funding is simply an area that cannot be slashed. We have done such a great job of reducing the instances of severe hunger here in the U.S., and now isn't the time to fall back on that progress.
Write to the House Agriculture Committee asking them to not only reverse the course of SNAP but to strengthen its reach.
Dear House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas:
I am greatly worried about the future of hunger in America with regards to your recent decision to cut funding for SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
Did you know that in July 2010, approximately one in seven American households were food insecure? And did you know that the instance of poverty in this country has been increasing for the past six years?
Surely you can agree that right now is no time to slash funding from important programs that help feed hungry families. So I can't understand why you would allow SNAP to take a $33 billion funding cut.
We need to continue to support families who need assistance. I hope you will recognize the importance in this goal and reinstate all funding for SNAP.
Sincerely,
