Almost as quickly as the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Acts (PIPA) were introduced, the backlash began. SOPA and PIPA are two bills currently sitting in Congress that aim to closely monitor all of our individual interactions on the Internet.
While these two legislations were initially proposed in order to curb copyright infringement, their effects on Internet freedom will stretch far beyond simple copyright laws. In fact, if these two laws pass, the government will be able to monitor everything we do online — and punish us for it.
While stopping copyright infringement is an important goal, SOPA and PIPA will undoubtedly transform the Internet into a policed forum, making freedom of expression impossible.
