If you're overweight and doing business with Southwest Airlines, the flight to your destination may be anything but a walk in the park. That's because Southwest discriminates against its heavy passengers.

A New Orleans woman is suing Southwest Airlines based on several incidents in which Southwest employees called her "too fat to fly." On separate occasions, the woman was confronted by agents who, upon boarding, told her she would have to purchase two seats. They did so in front of other boarders and did not ask the same of other passengers who were overweight.

When asked what the exact weight standards were, the employees could not give a specific response — only to claim they were unaware of any standards and the woman was simply too big to fly.

This arbitrary prejudice cannot continue. Tell Southwest Airlines to stop discriminating against its passengers and needs to come up with an official policy on seat weight limits.

Dear Southwest Airlines:

I am disturbed to find out about some recent instances of discrimination on the part of your employees. I'm sure no Southwest agent would show prejudice with regards to race or religion; yet that's exactly what they did when they told a New Orleans woman she was "too fat to fly."

On more than one occasion, the woman was told by Southwest agents she would need to purchase another seat if she wished to board the flights. When she asked what the weight or size standards exactly were, she received mixed responses — and not one employee could produce a company-wide set of official policies on weight restrictions.

Worse, these discussions were not held in a discrete manner. In fact the conversations happened within earshot of other passengers waiting to board. Other boarders who were overweight were neither spoken to nor required to purchase an extra ticket.

Essentially what the agents were doing was judging the woman based on her looks; moreover, based on how they themselves perceived her weight.

I cannot support an airline who continues to demean its own paying passengers and assert its personal views on them.

My request is simple: bring repercussions against the employees who have humiliated paying Southwest customers and come up with a sound policy for overweight passengers.

Until both of these demands have been met, I will not fly with Southwest.
