It's an unfortunate reality, but homophobia still runs rampant in every corner of the world. While progress has been made in some places and in some ways, many individuals still face persecution daily and often fear for their lives simply because of their sexual orientation.
An anti-homosexuality bill is currently being debated in Uganda, where same-sex relations is widely condemned. The initial bill called for the death penalty for homosexual individuals; the new, reintroduced bill has eliminated the death penalty stipulation but indicates a harsh prison sentence.
Urge the UN Human Rights Council to intervene in Uganda, to help end homophobia and to begin promoting tolerance and acceptance.
Dear United Nations Human Rights Council members:
I cannot stand by while homosexual individuals in Uganda are being persecuted due to homophobia — and you shouldn't either.
A bill is in discussions in Uganda that would require jail time for a person who is found to be homosexual. A previous bill suggested they should be punished by facing the death penalty.
Recognition of sexuality isn't a choice that should be governed within states or countries — rather, tolerance of sexuality needs to be mandated for the whole world. Uganda — or any country for that matter — should not be allowed to make the decision that all homosexuals be punished. It's simply a human rights issue, and that's where you come in.
I am writing to ask that you send members from the Human Rights Council to work with the Ugandan government, helping educate them on tolerance and acceptance as well as foster a new view toward homosexuality. You cannot stand by idly while more innocent people are persecuted.
Thank you for your time.
