Soap May Be Low-Cost Answer To Malaria

Moctar Dembélé and Gérard Niyondiko, two students from Burundi and Burkina Faso, became the first non-American team to win first place at Berkely's Global Social Venture Competition. The pair received the $25,000 Grand Prize to create a mosquito repelling soap in order to prevent malaria.

The low cost of producing the soap would make it an affordable alternative to more costly measures to prevent malaria in Africa. Currently the disease is the leading cause of death for small children in Central Africa and impacts more than 200 million people annually.

With support from their engineering school, 2iE in Ougadougou, Burkina Faso,  Dembélé and Niyondiko plan on launching Faso Soap as a local business, using natural ingredients and providing employment in their communities. Check-in Films is focusing on their efforts for a June documentary.
