Greenwashing — deceptively promoting one's organization's policies as eco-friendly — isn't something only big oil does anymore. Some of America's airlines are jumping on the greenwashing bandwagon. But they're not fooling us.
The European Union has set standards to limit global warming pollution by airlines, requiring them to pay a tax if they exceed the limitations. But the United States, along with other countries and many airlines are opposing the law. Several of the opposing airlines have consistently touted their respective commitment to keeping the environment clean.
If these airlines were so committed to environmental conservation, they shouldn't be trying to block clean air standards every step of the way. The same goes for the United States. If airlines don't want to pay the fine, they should find better ways to limit their emissions.
Write to President Obama asking he support the EU's emission standards.
Dear President Obama,
I was saddened to learn about your opposition to legislation set by the European Union that would help to limit carbon emissions from airplanes. I was also disappointed to find out many airlines oppose the new regulations as well.
You see, we as a country — as well as airlines like United and America — claim to be at the forefront of environmental preservation. But when we oppose a potentially groundbreaking law such as the one the EU has put forth, we look like hypocrites. On one hand, we promote our own commitment to environmental stewardship. On the other hand, we scoff when an outside party tells us what to do, even if it may be beneficial to the environment.
I don't understand this logic. And I would like to see us keep our commitment to conservation.
Our primary concern needs to be for the health of our planet, not profit.
Thank you for your time.
