American Airlines, Continental Airlines, and United Airlines have all crossed the line. European courts recently passed legislation that would require all airlines that fly within Europe's borders to be held responsible for their air pollution. American, Continental, and United then swiftly filed a lawsuit against the European courts in an attempt to reduce their responsibility in this matter.
Instead of blocking pro-environment actions, as major polluters airlines should be at the front lines of the fight against air pollution. While there is no way to stop the air contamination that airplanes emit, there are steps airline corporations can take to reduce their carbon footprint. Attempting to block legislation that would help strengthen our environment simply isn't one of them.
Tell American, Continental, and United that their pollution won't fly!
Dear CEOs of American Airlines, Continental Airlines, and United Airlines:
I was disappointed to learn of your attempts to block legislation that would hold you accountable for the massive amounts of pollution your airplanes emit each year. Europe recently passed a law that would hold you responsible for these emissions.
Yet, instead of taking ownership of the pollution your aircrafts create, you are attempting to shirk your culpability in the matter.
With global warming and carbon emissions taking a front seat in today's environmental debate, it would be wise for giant airline companies like yours to assume a leadership position within the cause rather than attempt to reduce your responsibility.
Please cease your lawsuit against European courts and take responsibility for the pollution your airplanes create. Being a successful company means accepting your obligation to the environment.
Thank you.
