By now, it's no secret that the April 2010 BP oil spill has caused billions of dollars in damage and continues to wreak havoc on the Gulf Coast as well as the people who live there. Categorized as the worst environmental disaster in history, the non-stop three-month flow of oil is estimated to have killed thousands of wildlife and many types of plant life. The fishing industry suffered billions of dollars in losses and tourism — a lucrative industry in the Gulf — halted almost completely.
BP has made strong efforts to clean up their mess and to remedy the situation. But the tragedy and damage remain. Sign the petition telling Congress to donate BP's paid fines under the Clean Water Act to the cause of rebuilding the Gulf.
Dear Congress member,
You're already aware of the damage that BP has caused down in the Gulf of Mexico due to the April 20, 2010 oil spill on the Deepwater Horizon rig. Although BP has made some respectable strides toward repairing this devastated region, there is still much more to be done in the way of restoring the precious land, wildlife, and plant life that originate there.
Under the current Clean Water Act legislation, the fines BP is required to pay will mostly be given to the government. What's the point of this? Shouldn't BP's money be dedicated to restoring the gulf, to saving wildlife, and to the fishermen who lost all of their livelihoods?
I am writing to urge that you allocate ALL of BP's restoration funds to the cause of rebuilding the Gulf. That money does not belong in anyone else's pockets. Please see that BP pays their share and that those fines are given to the people who need it most down in the Gulf.
Thank you for your time.
