05/10/13: New research reveals that deforestation is leading to a decrease in rainfall in the region. In other words, as Brazil clears more rainforest to make room for agriculture, productivity in those same fields has dropped due to reduced rainfall and rising temperatures, a direct result of the lost rainforest. If Brazil doesn't reverse course, they risk the region's economic health as well as environmental health -- a true no-win scenario. Take action and sign below!

In 2011, the Brazilian government declared its intent to keep deforestation from ruining its Amazonian rainforest. President Dilma Roussef herself even promised not to allow more deforestation or pardon for environmental criminals.

But since then, the fight against loggers seems to be a losing one as deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has only seen a sharp increase — as has violence against those trying to stand up for the environment.

The pressure is on President Roussef now. If she does not step up and honor her promise to keep the Brazilian Amazon safe from further logging, the forest will be in grave danger, as will all of its inhabitants — human or otherwise.

Write to President Roussef telling her to keep her promise for the Brazilian Amazon!

Dear President Dilma Roussef,

I was very happy to hear of your promise to keep the Brazilian Amazon safe from more logging and deforestation. Your vision was to cut deforestation in this area by 80% by the year 2020.

But it looks like things are only getting worse as deforestation has increased sharply since you made this promise. I cannot stand by while you allow selfish and commercial interests to get in the way of the health of the environment.

I am asking that you honor your promise and speak out for what is right. If you allow this to continue, the ecosystem of the Amazon will be in grave danger.

Please honor your word.

Thank you.

May 13, 2013 D. Ravenwood You must stand up to the loggers at all costs! There have to be ways to protect these lands we all need; to make the loggers understand this affects them & their families just as much as all others. It cannot continue. Please don't back down.
May 13, 2013 Sandra Veillette It is so important to halt logging and deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon as this ecosystem is integral to the life of the planet as well as the human and animal populations in this unique area. It is the responsibility of those in power to be wise.
