Coal ash seeps into our water and atmosphere as deadly toxins are emitted from coal plants and coal disposal sites. The runoff contains toxic chemicals like mercury, lead, selenium, and disturbingly, arsenic. This pollution significantly increases risks for cancer and other serious health defects.
The seriousness of this problem is no secret to the EPA, yet no regulations have been put in place that would protect us from this pollution.
We need comprehensive regulations and standards implemented in order to ensure coal ash doesn't pollute our environment and subsequently pose grave public health risks. Sign the petition asking EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson to stop stalling on this issue and see to it that coal ash doesn't threaten our health, animal life, or the environment any longer.
Dear Administrator Jackson,
Coal ash pollution is causing serious health and environmental problems, and as of yet nothing has been done to combat its effects.
Coal ash runoff enters our air and our water-waste ponds, and landfills drain into drinking water supplies. The toxins consequently end up in our drinking water, which carries such chemicals as mercury, lead, boron, arsenic, selenium, cadmium, and thallium. Many of these toxic substances have been linked to the development of cancer cells in humans.
Coal ash has poisoned at least 23 states' water supplies. This pollution must come to an end. There is simply no reason not to place regulations on a substance that is causing cancer, birth defects, and other serious health problems.
Please work to implement strict coal ash waste standards so that we may exist in a cleaner environment and live healthier lives.
