The Patagonia mountain region in the Chilean Andes is one of the most beautiful and pristine natural areas on the planet. It's home to awe-inspiring mountain ranges and precious plant and animal life. But several international companies are planning to build a hydroelectric dam in Patagonia — one which would threaten the future safety of the entire region. If built, the dam could flood regions and kill off entire species of plants and already-endangered animals.
In June 2011, a Chilean court suspended the plan for further review. However, this suspension is only temporary and the Patagonia remains at risk.
Sign the petition asking Chilean President Sebastián Piñera to permanently prohibit the hydroelectric dam from being built anywhere it would threaten the safety of the environment in Patagonia.
Dear President Sebastián Piñera,
I have just learned about the potential plans to build a hydroelectric dam in the heart of Patagonia — a majestic place that is home to unique plant and animal species. The dam could have disastrous implications for the native species.
Though a Chilean appeals court suspended the plans in June 2011, the suspension is merely temporary, and the project could begin again at any time. We can't allow companies motivated by profit to ruin the precious environment we have left on this planet.
Please do everything in your power to see that this and all other hazardous projects have no place in Patagonia.
Thank you.
