Constrictor snakes are some of the most dangerous snakes in the world. In 2009, a Florida toddler was strangled by a Burmese python that had escaped from its enclosure and gotten into her crib.
It's not just humans who face the wrath of the snakes— invasive snakes are wreaking havoc on local ecosystems, killing other native species like bobcats and raccoons.
Most of these snakes aren't native to Florida; rather, they're exotic pets that have escaped from homes or pet shops. That's why we need legislation that will prevent these dangerous snakes from entering into ecosystems they don't belong and putting humans and nature in harm's way.
H.R. 511 would ban the import and interstate trade of some of the deadliest constrictor snakes, including the Burmese python. This bill is not only important for the safety of humans and animals, but it's also necessary to keep the snakes safe.

Dear Representative Thomas Rooney:
I applaud your efforts to protect Florida's humans and ecosystem alike by introducing H.R. 511, a bill that would ban interstate trade or the import of certain exotic constrictor snakes.
As of now, at least 15 people have been killed by constrictor snakes in the United States and have decimated native animal populations like that of the bobcat, raccoon, and opossum.
The fact is, these snakes don't belong in Florida's nature or the homes of Floridians. Most of these accidents have occurred because a pet escaped its enclosure — either from a pet store or household.
Keeping these creatures as pets just isn't worth risking health and safety of our children and environment. Please continue doing all you can to see that H.R. 511 passes into law.
Thank you.
