More threats of oil drilling!?

You may have become tired hearing about all of the dangerous oil drilling projects that are taking place and planned for the future, but that only means it's time to step up the fight against it. This time, Ecuador needs our help.

Ecuador's Yasuni National Park is in grave danger of future drilling by an array of oil companies. A few years back, the Ecuadorian government promised to keep a large chunk of the forest from drilling prospects if the international community agreed to help fund Ecuador in exchange for a drilling ban.

But Ecuador shouldn't extort the rest of the world in exchange for a ban they should be observing anyway. It's not our job to pay Ecuador to keep their own land healthy and clean.

Write to the Ecuadorian government asking that they start acting in favor of their own environmental preservation.

Dear President Rafael Correa:

I am very disappointed in Ecuador's choice to ask the rest of the world for money in exchange for halting plans to drill for oil in the Yasuni National Park.

The Yasuni is one of the most bio-diverse locations on the planet; it's one of the most precious natural areas left on Earth. But it also sits above a massive oil field, which has been estimated to be worth tens of billions of dollars.

In 2007, Ecuador agreed not to drill in the Yasuni on the condition that the international community help support Ecuador financially. But this is nothing short of extortion. We shouldn't have to pay you to act in favor of your own country's environmental health.

Please stop putting the burden on the rest of the world and do what's right for Earth's ecosystem.
