Don't Wait Until It's Too Late

This young U.S. Navy veteran has a very important message for all veterans.  "Don't wait if you are having problems."  If you are recognizing that you are having problems, or are hearing that from others, don't wait to go see the local VA.  You have earned those benefits.  They are there for you.  Don't hesitate to use them.

Look, we all come back from the experiences of war with issues that need to be addressed, whether we are aware of them consciously, or not.  Some of us are able to get through them relatively easily, especially if we have strong family and friend relationships.  But even then, it is not always a panacea for getting through some of the memories and the anxieties associated with our wartime experiences.  Sometimes we need a little help; help that comes with experience.  The VA has been dealing with these issues for a long time. They know what we are up against.  They are there to be used.

War effects us in ways that are beyond anything that can be called "normal."  War, though it has been an inescapable reality for all of human history, is not normal behavior for human beings.  Oddly speaking, it makes sense that we would come away from war somewhat troubled by the physical and psychological experiences we've had in war.

The wounds of war, both physical and psychological, are often devastating.  The damage that modern weaponry can impose on the body are beyond the ability for most of us to contemplate, yet they are more and more survivable these days too.  The psychological injuries that arise from the surreal experiences, the sights, the sounds, the smells and the memories of war can also be devastating, yet they, too, can be survived and surmounted.  The do not have to control our lives.  We can recover from our injuries and move on, maybe even more confidently than before we received them, because we have had the courage to face them and the inner metal to refuse to be conquered by them.  If we can survive the personal ravages of war and come out stronger as a result, nothing that every-day-life can throw at us will be able to intimidate us.

The VA is there to help us get through the immediate and long term issues that we may have brought home with us from the front.  The medical and the counseling services that they can provide are experienced with our concerns more than any other institution of its kind.  They know what we have faced.  They know our injuries intimately.  There are other veterans there that have been through, or are going through, the same kinds of problems.  They can be a force for very real, effective and familiar help as well.

To my fellow veterans of any era, don't hesitate to use the services of the VA.  They know what they know, because they've been there with us.  They want to help.  Don't hesitate to ask for the help if you feel the need.  You will be welcomed.  I say that because that has been my personal experience with the VA.
