7/18/2012: The Honoring America's Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act of 2012 passed with unanimous consent, ensuring critical health care for veterans and their families who lived at Camp Lejeune. The bill is still awaiting signing by the President. Continue signing in support of this important legislation!
Goal: 15,000 Progress: 2,098
Sponsored by: The Veterans Site

From the 1950s to the 1980s, countless military members and their families suffered a virulent enemy. But it wasn't the opposing country with its weapons or the fear of mortal danger. The enemy was the water they were drinking on the military base Camp Lejeune.

Over the course of several years, over 70 chemical contaminants were dumped near the base. The chemicals seeped into the groundwater, and eventually caused hundreds of residents to contract cancer.

In the wake of the tragedies of sickness and death caused by the contaminated water, some of the affected families have tried to obtain compensation for treatment and suffering. But the military has fought tooth and nail to obscure records from the public and to fight paying these families what they deserve.

Tell the Department of Veterans Affairs to take responsibility for its mistakes at Camp Lejeune and pay ample restitution to the families involved.

Dear Eric Shinseki, Secretary of Veterans Affairs:

We have got to start taking better care of America's veterans — ESPECIALLY those who have suffered at the hands of military ignorance and lack of transparency.

You see, hundreds of service members and their families developed cancer and other serious illnesses from consuming contaminated water at Camp Lejeune from the late 1950s through the late 1980s. Over 70 chemical solvents were dumped at the site without using proper safety precautions. The chemicals seeped into the groundwater and the result was catastrophic.

Many have filed lawsuits, but many are also still struggling with the residual effects of the contamination. It's time the military take responsibility for its actions and do the right thing.

Get these people the care they need. Period.

May 1, 2013 karen hise My family was there in the early 80's. Both my husband and I were stationed there in the mid 70's. My daughter has had some of the most unusual medical problems I have ever seen one single person have.....makes one wonder.
May 1, 2013 Dixie Vance While serving their country they, and their families were exposed to toxic waste. Asking why does not help. Though I would like to know the answer to that. Of course the government should be responsible. Will that bring them back their health? NO
