President Obama has announced that he will begin sending condolence letters to the families of soldiers who have committed suicide. In the past, this initiative has been met with concern and stigma, because many believe that acknowledging suicide is taboo.

President Obama removed that stigma by saying, "This issue is emotional, painful and complicated, but these Americans served our nation bravely. They didn't die because they were weak."

Recently, there has been a much greater push for service member mental health services. President Obama recognizes the extreme mental toll war can produce, and he wants to make sure our soldiers are getting the help they need.

Sign the petition thanking President Obama for his continued support of our veterans and for taking a real, growing problem out of the stigma in which it once existed.

Dear President Obama,

I commend you for taking the step to recognize our service members who have been psychologically affected by the consequences of war. It's a growing reality that many soldiers are taking their own lives as a result of the painful mental difficulties associated with wartime. Up until recently, suicides were not recognized by the US government as direct outcomes of war.

The reality is that war places stress and unrest on the human psyche, and some soldiers find themselves unable to handle the extreme emotional agony. It's incredibly noble of you to honor those who have taken their own lives as a result of war by extending your condolences to their families.

We simply cannot ignore the hardships that war and battle produce for our brave soldiers. Recognizing that suicide is a real issue within this community is one step toward ensuring future soldiers and veterans are receiving the help and support they need.

Thank you for continuing to stand up for America's soldiers.

Sincerely,
