Goal: 25,000 Progress: 3,413
Sponsored by: The Veterans Site

Our young veterans have served America with pride and honor. When they return from service, they deserve to have secure futures waiting for them.

But too often, when a service member returns home from duty, he is met with tremendous adversity in finding employment. In fact, the unemployment rate for young veterans has reached over 25%.

It's not that veterans are unqualified — many return home having learned valuable skills in the automotive, medical, and defense systems fields. The problem lies within a lack of programs that help veterans translate their skills into sustainable employment. Currently there is a program that exists in this vein, but it's only required for marines and isn't as comprehensive as it should be.

Write to the Department of Labor Secretary Hilda Solis asking her to support the creation of better programs to help our veterans find suitable employment when they return home from service.

Dear Secretary Solis,

As we continue to bring troops home from their services overseas, we are going to need to address the growing unemployment rate among America's young veterans.

Our service members serve our country with pride and honor. They are disciplined young men and women who make the ultimate sacrifice to keep us safe. Yet when they return, they are often faced with tremendous adversity when it comes to finding jobs.

There are many reasons why unemployment among young veterans may be growing, but what we're ultimately lacking are programs designed to assist veterans in transitioning back into regular society. Though service members learn many valuable skills while on duty, finding ways to translate those skills in the business sector can be an extraordinary challenge.

That's why we need to help them learn how to present themselves and their honed abilities to potential employers in relatable ways.

The marine corps is the only branch of the military that currently requires its veterans to participate in a program such as this, but many say it's lacking in effectiveness.

Please take steps toward addressing the problem of young veteran employment by spearheading projects to help them transition back into society.

Sincerely,
