The suicide rate among American soldiers is steadily rising. In fact, over the past two years, the military has seen more deaths by suicide than by combat. The rise in suicides demonstrates that stress associated with being in combat is only growing for our brave troops.
We'll never know what soldiers experience without seeing it ourselves, but it's safe to say that what they endure can certainly contribute to post-deployment challenges as well as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
We need to create more comprehensive programs — that soldiers can turn to during and after deployment — that are designed to address the psychological issues they may be encountering due to their time served in the military.
Sign the petition in support of programs that would address soldiers' psychological well-being both during and after deployment.
Dear Representative Rush D. Holt,
I am writing to you because of your past record of standing up for our American soldiers. You authored a bill that, had it passed, would have required phone contacts to be made to Army reservists every 90 days following their return from deployment in order to ensure the mental well-being of the soldiers. However, this bill was blocked numerous times and never made it into law. Today I am writing to ask that you take a stand once again for our troops.
It was recently reported that, for the past two years, more soldiers are committing suicide than are dying in combat. This signifies a true lack in programs meant to help troops mentally cope with the job they are doing.
Post traumatic stress disorder can wreak havoc on a life, particularly one that's seen what many troops see during wartime. We need to be making sure that our soldiers are receiving the care they need — both physically AND psychologically.
Please do your part to support our troops and veterans by creating legislation and programs that will address the psychological issues one may experience during and after deployment.
Thank you for your time.
