According to a new version of the GI Bill that was passed through Congress in late 2010 (a.k.a. GI Bill 2.0), many veterans attending private schools will be responsible for a considerable amount of their tuition bill. Congress voted to revise the bill, agreeing only to pay a flat rate for all but public colleges.
The revision helps veterans looking to pursue a public education, but it severely cripples the assistance to those who are already attending private universities. Many veteran students are now scrambling because funding that they were promised will be cut.
Student veterans shouldn't have to retroactively take on the burden of paying for their own schooling; they've served our country, and now it's time we pay them back by doing all we can to promote their futures.
Don't let Congress take away the funds our veterans deserve!
Dear Senator Daniel Akaka,
I am appalled at your sponsorship of the GI Bill 2.0 — or better known as the revision to the post 9/11 GI Bill that will remove funding for tuition for many of America's veterans.
While I understand this revision will provide more assistance to those veterans in public schools, the changes remove critical funding for those in private schools. The new bill simply shuffles the need from one party to another.
Students who previously based their educational future on the promises of the old GI Bill are now facing extreme hardship in attempting to pay for the rest of their schooling. These poor students were mislead into thinking they'd be taken care of, only to now be left stranded wondering why the country they fought for isn't fighting for them.
Your sponsorship of the GI Bill 2.0 is highly irresponsible and founded in questionable theories at best. Please reconsider reinstating tuition provisions for the thousands of student veterans who need your help.
Sincerely,
