Injured soldiers who return from war should come home knowing they are going to receive the care they need from the country they served. But new combat devices and advanced technology are creating injuries that haven't been seen with the high frequency they are now appearing.
Reproductive injuries are perhaps some of the most physically and psychologically damaging ones a soldier can receive — those types of wounds can cause a lifetime of problems such as reproductive and fertility problems, relationship issues, low self-esteem, etc. That's why it's so important that the VA offer comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation therapy for veterans with reproductive injuries.
Recently the VA did just that by adding necessary coverage for reproductive and urinary tract injuries to the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance Traumatic Injury Protection Program.
Thank the VA for standing up for our veterans and for honoring their dignity.
Dear Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki,
I would like to commend you for stepping up and addressing the sensitive issue of combat-obtained reproductive injuries. The fact is, these types of wounds are on the rise as military systems develop more advanced battle technology. More and more, soldiers are coming home with grave injuries like these — ones that can change one's life forever.
Our reproductive organs are what make us male or female, a way we identify with ourselves and with others; they affect our relationships and our future generations. So it's no surprise that injuries sustained to these organs can be very traumatic, both physically and mentally.
I am overjoyed that the VA recognizes the importance of properly taking care of veterans with these kinds of wounds.
Thank you for your continued commitment to America's heroes.
