Congress is trying to cut yet another vital service that is aimed toward combating veteran homelessness. The proposed cuts would affect the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the VA's Supported Housing voucher program — two programs that currently help veterans find and stay in homes.

While our leaders are attempting to cut spending and save money, Congress is neglecting to consider that the cost of veteran homelessness will exponentially overshadow the savings garnered from cutting programs. These proposals are extremely shortsighted.

Though we in America need to find ways to save, taking money away from the health and well being of our veterans is an unacceptable way to do it. Write to U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan asking him to oppose these cuts and fight against those proposing them on behalf of our veterans.

Dear Secretary Shaun Donovan:

Our veterans need your help.

Congress is proposing yet another round of cuts to vital programs that go toward combating veteran homelessness. The proposed cuts would affect the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the VA's Supported Housing voucher program. These two resources are aimed at serving veteran populations that experience mental illness and homelessness by providing them with permanent, affordable housing as well as clinical care and outreach services.

At a meeting with the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) in 2009, you said, "Ending the continuing tragedy of homelessness demands thoughtful and focused leadership...The bottom line is that through our combined efforts every man, woman and child in this nation should have access to a safe, affordable place to lay their head at night."

I am writing to see that you deliver on this promise. Now more than ever before is the time to step up in favor of those who have laid down their lives for our country. They deserve to come home and know they'll be taken care of — just as they did for us.

Take a stand for our veterans and see to it these cuts never make it past the Congress floor.

Thank you for your time.

May 2, 2013 Julie Claunch there are many areas of waste in the budget, but this is not one of them. no vet should have to face homelessness for any reason, but particularly not because of wrong choices made to 'solve' the budget crisis. please do the right thing, thank you.

Apr 30, 2013 Alice Arnold One of the problems is the stupid law of 1987 that gives spouses of retirees 1/2 of their pay- so many cannot even live on what they have left that THEY worked for. And they get their share AFTER all deductions to pay for the EX's benefits!
